Chapter Eighteen

DAWN COLORED THE EASTERN horizon. We’d been up all night. Some people, like Mumi, were used to that. If a shipload of sailors came in, she’d keep standing until the last salty dog spent his last rupa.

She dozed by her fryers, the oil cool, until the early morning chill got to her. Then she started a pot of water boiling, rummaged around, and produced a bag smudged with a dark powder. I should’ve guessed what it was.

We’d dragged chairs from the old school to sit around the bonfire in the middle of the marketplace. Rhee slept in the chair next to me while I talked Geeze, who drank wine like it was water. He’d had a good night. At one point, I lost track of him. He’d showed up with his arm around one of the rajani, Serene. Uncle Dog hadn’t noticed because he’d been passed out on the ground. Granny Heehee had the sense to take him and herself back to the Hintala Village.

The constable had drifted off by the time Rhee and I returned. His wives stayed, and they danced with Bragg Bharta and his women. And then they too went to bed. Slowly, the party shrank.

Only a few of us were left, and it felt good. Being around all the women felt so natural. And Geeze was growing on me. He had a quick wit and could be so funny, though at times, he’d say something in elven, remember I didn’t speak it, and then try and translate. He’d get confused, repeat himself, or stare blankly. Sad to say, but his mind was going.

Figg wandered up, back in her tunic, with a wool poncho over it. Big boots had replaced her sandals. Her net was back over her shoulder and her fork was in her hand. She chatted with Mumi in a low voice. The sorceress kept throwing me nervous glances. I had memories of movies about bad workplace romances, the next day, after a Christmas party. They weren’t my memories—I wasn’t a nine-to-five kind of guy.

The scent of the coffee hit me, and then the pain. This time, I felt panic as well. I leaned forward, trying not to fall out of the chair. I had my eyes squeezed shut.

“Axel, what is wrong? What is the meaning of this?” Geeze was next to me, shaking me. Rhee woke up as well. She knelt at my feet.

Figg hurried over. She didn’t say anything, but I felt her presence and smelled the tebbeck on her. Having her near made me feel better.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I fell off the chair, onto my knees. My dad would be so fucking worried about me, and my mom, it would kill her. All my mothers had loved me so much. I must’ve come from a situation similar to the Foulwater families’, but how was that possible? Maybe I’d migrated over from Utah. At one point, the Mormons had done the polygamy thing. That had changed, though.

I had to find my parents, or least get a message to them.
